Laura Esserman, M.D.

Professor of Surgery and Radiology
University of California, San Francisco

Dr. Laura Esserman is Professor of Surgery and Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and director of the UCSF Breast Care Clinic. Her work in breast cancer spans the spectrum from basic science to public policy issues and the impact of both on the delivery of clinical care.

Dr. Esserman is recognized as a thought-leader in cancer screening and overdiagnosis, as well as innovative clinical trial design. She led the creation of the University of California-wide Athena Breast Health Network, a learning system designed to integrate clinical care and research as it follows 150,000 women from screening through treatment and outcomes.

The Athena Network launched the PCORI-funded Wisdom Study, which tests a personalized approach to breast cancer screening in 100,000 women. She is also a leader of the innovative I-SPY TRIAL model, designed to accelerate the identification and approval of effective new agents for women with high risk breast cancers. In 2020, she received FDA approval for an I-SPY COVID trial, designed to rapidly screen and confirm high-impact treatments to reduce mortality and time on ventilators.

Leanne Williams, Ph.D.

Vincent V.C. Woo Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Stanford University School of Medicine

Dr. Williams is the Vincent V.C. Woo Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford and Director of Stanford’s Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness.

Using neuroimaging and clinical measures, she has identified biotypes of depression and anxiety. She has developed a novel imaging technology platform to measure these biotypes to help personalize treatment selection among medications, behavioral interventions, neuromodulation, novel and exploratory therapeutics.

She wrote the first book on Precision Psychiatry, published by APA, and contributed more than 380 scientific papers to the field.

Leonard Zon, M.D.

Director of Stem Cell Research
Harvard Medical School

Dr. Leonard I. Zon is the Grousbeck Professor of Pediatric Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Director of the Stem Cell Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. He received a B.S. in chemistry and natural sciences from Muhlenberg College and an M.D. from Jefferson Medical College. He subsequently did an internal medicine residency at New England Deaconess Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Dr. Zon is the former President of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, Head of the external investigators of the Zebrafish Genome Institution, and Chair of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute’s Executive Committee.

Dr. Zon is internationally recognized for his pioneering research in the new fields of stem cell biology and cancer genetics. His current research focuses on two critical avenues of investigation: identifying the genes that direct stem cells to become cancers or to develop into more specialized blood or organ cells, and developing chemical or genetic suppressors to cure cancers and many other devastating diseases.

Eric Verdin, M.D.

President and CEO
The Buck Institute for Research on Aging

One of the world’s most highly cited scientists, Dr. Eric Verdin has led the Buck since 2016. His lab studies the relationship between aging and the immune system.

A native of Belgium, Dr. Verdin received his medical degree from the University of Liege and completed additional training at Harvard Medical School. He previously held positions at University of Brussels, National Institutes of Health, Picower Institute and Gladstone Institutes.
